Winter Utility Protection for Albertans: Stay Warm and Safe!
As the winter chill sets in, Alberta is stepping up to ensure that no one is left in the cold! From October 15 to April 15, the province has put in place some important Winter Rules for utilities that protect residents from having their essential services turned off during the harsh winter months.
The good news? Electricity services cannot be fully disconnected during this time, and starting November 15, natural gas services will also be protected from disconnections. This is a significant relief for many families who rely on heating and electricity.
Imagine having to choose between keeping your home warm and putting food on the table. That’s a choice no one should have to make! These regulations help ensure that Alberta families can stay comfortable and safe when the weather outside gets tough.
But it doesn’t stop there! Even outside of the winter months, if a utility disconnection is planned and freezing temperatures are forecasted, the disconnection will be halted. This is all about keeping everyone safe!
If you or someone you know is facing being disconnected, don’t worry! Starting November 1, the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) will reach out to support those affected. They work with various agencies to help reconnect your services, so you don’t have to face these challenges alone.
If you need help with utility bills, want to set up a manageable payment plan, or need assistance with disputes with your provider, reach out to the UCA at 310-4822, via email at [email protected] or visit their website at UCAhelps.alberta.ca. They are here to help!
