The recent negotiations between the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) and the Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) have left many concerned. Why? Because just when it seemed like a deal was within reach, talks broke down!

The ATA has been vocal about the needs for improved conditions in classrooms, advocating for better support for teachers, families, and students. They highlighted the pressing need for more teachers, which is crucial for creating a positive learning environment.

Here's where things get interesting: TEBA made a significant offer. They proposed hiring 1,000 teachers per year for three years at a whopping $750 million! This offer closely aligned with what the ATA requested back in June.

Alongside adding more teachers, TEBA also suggested a 12% salary increase over four years, which would help newer teachers and tackle recruitment challenges. However, on August 27, the ATA’s bargaining team rejected this proposal, arguing for fewer teachers to allocate more funds towards higher salaries instead.

It’s a complex situation! On one hand, more teachers could ease classroom pressures, while on the other, the union's strategy is under scrutiny. Parents, students, and the public are watching closely as this story unfolds.
