Saskatchewan Reaches Agreement to Compensate Île-à-la-Crosse School Survivors
The Government of Saskatchewan has taken a significant step towards healing by reaching an Agreement in Principle to compensate the former students of the Île-à-la-Crosse School.
Launched in the 1860s, this school operated until the 1970s, and its history is tied to many painful experiences. Now, Premier Scott Moe announced that the province will pay $40.2 million to restore hope and promote reconciliation among the affected communities.
Premier Moe offered a heartfelt apology, expressing, "Saskatchewan is best when we collaborate with Métis and First Nations, making it a place everyone can thrive in." The government hopes this agreement will provide some closure to the survivors and their families.
The proposed settlement is under review and is expected to gain approval from the Court of King's Bench in early 2026, leading to a simplified claims process for those seeking individual compensation.
