If you’re considering working in Canada, there’s important news for you! Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) has recently raised the wage thresholds for employers and foreign nationals participating in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). This means it’s time to pay attention to how much you might earn in various provinces.

As of June 27, 2025, if you’re applying for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), the wages you earn will determine whether you qualify under the high-wage or low-wage streams of the TFWP. For example, if you earn above the new threshold—let’s say in British Columbia, it’s now $36.60 per hour—you’ll be in the high-wage stream. If you’re earning less, you’ll fall under the low-wage stream, which has additional rules to follow.

But it’s not just about the wages; there are other crucial changes too! There’s currently a freeze on processing LMIAs for low-wage positions in areas with higher unemployment rates. So, if you’re eyeing a job in places like Toronto or Calgary, make sure to check those numbers!

With the TFWP in flux, this is a great time to get informed and plan your next steps. If this sounds complicated, don’t worry! Our team at the Cohen Immigration Law Firm is here to help you understand these changes and what they mean for your job hunt. Schedule a free consultation with us today!
