Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill expressed his excitement, stating, "Our government is very happy to support the addition of new training opportunities for medical residents here in the province." This expansion means more chances for medical residents to train in our beautiful community.
Currently, the College of Medicine is offering 68 residency seats in the 2026 Canadian Residency Match System (CaRMS), with an increase of 20 seats over the last five years! This is fantastic news for those looking to practice in family medicine.
Dr. Sarah Forgie, the Dean of the College of Medicine, highlighted the importance of where medical students train, saying, "Where learners train strongly impacts where they practice." This means that having training right here in Nipawin can lead to more doctors choosing to work in our area once they graduate.
Nipawin Mayor Marlon Zacharias also voiced his support, noting that this reflects the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare in our community. The new residency seats will help highlight the exceptional qualities of Nipawin, attracting new doctors to stay and build their careers here.
Mark your calendars! The training for these new residency seats is expected to begin on July 1, 2026. It’s an exciting time for healthcare in Nipawin!
