Are you considering pursuing work or study opportunities in Canada? Understanding the difference between visas and permits is key to your immigration journey!

In Canada, work and study permits are essential documents that let you live and work while you're here. They determine your legal status and what you can do in the country. Importantly, work permits fall into two main categories: Open Work Permits and closed/Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)-based work permits.

But don't get confused – visas are different! They grant you entry (or re-entry) into Canada. Think of them as your ticket to cross the border with legal approval. Whether you're coming as a worker, student, or tourist, these are usually called temporary resident visas (TRVs). If you don’t need a TRV, you might need an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead.

You might be wondering if you can pay for your visa or eTA in your local currency. Good news! Many newcomers can. Check the IRCC website to find out if you’re eligible to pay in your currency.

If you're applying for your work or study permit, remember not to apply for an eTA or visa separately. Successful work/study permit applicants will receive their visa or eTA processed simultaneously.

Once you've got your temporary resident visa, can you leave Canada and come back? It depends! With a single-entry visa, you'll need a new one to re-enter unless you’re traveling briefly to certain locations. But with a multiple-entry visa, you're free to come and go within its validity period.

Curious about when your visa expires? Check your documents! Sometimes a visa may expire before your status as a temporary resident does. In such cases, you might need to extend your visa or renew your eTA. Make sure you stay informed!

And if you've got a new passport but your valid visa is in your old one, don’t panic! You can still enter Canada, but it’s best to obtain a new visa in your new passport to avoid delays.
