Building Hope: The Maskêkosihk Recovery Community
Great news for those seeking support and recovery! The Maskêkosihk Recovery Community is on the way to becoming a reality in Alberta, thanks to a vital partnership with the Enoch Cree Nation. With a generous investment of $35 million from the provincial government, this facility is set to welcome individuals looking to rebuild their lives.
Located at the Enoch Cree Nation, just west of Edmonton, the community will provide holistic addiction treatment for up to 300 people annually, all within a culturally welcoming environment. The goal? To help folks heal and reconnect with their communities while offering a safe space for recovery.
The dedication of Alberta’s government towards supporting those battling addiction is commendable. They’re not just building treatments; they’re nurturing communities. In fact, they’re on a mission to create 11 similar recovery communities across the province, with 5 of them proudly partnering with Indigenous communities.
Why is this so crucial? Indigenous Peoples are often disproportionately affected by the addiction crisis. By creating spaces that respect and incorporate Indigenous cultures and traditions, these recovery communities can provide effective, culturally appropriate care. The Maskêkosihk Recovery Community stands as a testament to this approach, promising a brighter future for both Indigenous Peoples and all Albertans.
But wait, there’s more! Individuals can stay at the recovery community for up to a year without any cost to them or their families. They’ll have access to tailored support for their unique journey, including wellness practices, employment training, and a chance to form healthier habits.
If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction or mental health challenges, don't hesitate! You can reach out to 211 Alberta for a wealth of resources and support. And for those grappling with opioid addiction, the Virtual Opioid Dependency Program is available seven days a week.
This initiative isn’t just about recovery; it’s about strengthening our communities and restoring lives. We’re looking forward to seeing the positive impact of the Maskêkosihk Recovery Community!
