A Big Lesson in Workplace Safety from George’s Farm Centre
On September 19, a significant ruling took place at the Red Deer Court of Justice involving George’s Farm Centre Ltd. The employer pleaded guilty to a charge concerning workplace safety, specifically for allowing a worker to be in a dangerous position near moving equipment.
The case stems from an incident that happened on June 23, 2023, where a worker suffered serious injuries while trying to stop a rolling air seeder tank.
Instead of a traditional fine, the court imposed a creative sentence requiring the company to contribute $108,000 to develop safety training software for workplaces. This software aims to help workers recognize hazards and stay safe on the job.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act encourages such creative penalties, allowing fines to be redirected towards improving workplace safety.
Remember, Alberta’s OHS laws are here to protect both workers and employers, ensuring a safer work environment. Let's all prioritize safety!
