Exciting news for international graduates from college bachelor’s programs in Canada! Gone are the days of having to worry about field of study requirements if you’re looking to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

Previously, graduates from university bachelor's programs enjoyed this exemption, but college bachelor's grads had to meet specific study fields to qualify. Now, as of March 2025, this requirement has been lifted, making it a lot simpler for college grads to secure work permits!

However, keep in mind that graduates from other college programs and those with non-bachelor’s degrees will still have to meet certain field of study requirements. And if you applied for your initial study permit after November 1, 2024, new language proficiency standards also come into play.

So what are these new language requirements? For bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree holders, you’ll need to show a language proficiency of level 7—pretty manageable! However, those in other college programs will need a level 5. Make sure to check these requirements and plan accordingly!

It's also important to note that some graduates still won't be eligible for a PGWP, especially if you've received a permit before, took certain courses, or your studies were conducted mainly online.

If you have questions about your specific situation, we recommend scheduling a Free Work Permit Consultation with our experts at the Cohen Immigration Law Firm. We're here to help you navigate these new changes and set you on the path to your Canadian career!
