Welcome to Canada: The New Norm for Citizenship Ceremonies
In recent years, Canada has made a remarkable shift in how it conducts citizenship ceremonies. Gone are the days of large gatherings in community halls. Instead, virtual citizenship ceremonies have taken center stage. Initially introduced during the pandemic, these online events are now the norm!
Between January and September 2023, the numbers speak for themselves: 224 virtual ceremonies each month compared to just 52 in-person ones. This change helps keep everyone safe while ensuring that new citizens can still celebrate their milestone.
But what is a virtual citizenship ceremony like? Imagine gathering with your loved ones from the comfort of your home, dressed smartly (yes, business attire is recommended!) and joining a ceremony via Zoom. During this special event, you will recite the Oath of Citizenship and sing the Canadian national anthem, marking the official start of your journey as a Canadian citizen.
So, what do you need to know to prepare for this exciting day? Make sure to keep an eye on your inbox — you’ll receive an invitation from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) a week or two before your ceremony. And don’t forget to have the right tech ready, like a computer or tablet with a stable internet connection. You’ll also need to dress appropriately and have some important documents handy, such as your Permanent Resident card.
Remember, you have to be physically present in Canada to take your oath. If you find yourself outside the country on your ceremony date, get in touch with IRCC for guidance.
Ready for the ceremony? The experience typically lasts about 1.5 hours, starting with a registration phase where your identity is confirmed. Then, you’ll move to the main event — the oath ceremony itself, where a judge will welcome you and explain the importance of citizenship.
After you’ve taken your oath and celebrated your new status, complete any necessary paperwork. Once you receive your citizenship certificate, you're just one step away from applying for your Canadian passport!
Congratulations on embarking on this exciting journey into Canadian citizenship!
