Canada's Immigration Backlog: What You Need to Know

The immigration backlog continues to grow—learn how it might affect your applications!
Canada immigration IRCC News backlog update

As of August 31, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has a whopping 958,850 applications in backlog. This is up from 901,700 at the end of July, and it seems like this number just keeps climbing.

If you're one of the many waiting patiently for your immigration application to be processed, you're not alone! In total, there are around 2.2 million applications in various stages at IRCC.

Let’s break down the numbers a bit: there are 901,800 applications for permanent residence alone. While 431,500 are being processed on time, that still leaves a backlog of 470,300 applications. If you're looking at family sponsorship, the backlog is at its highest since August 2022!

Temporary resident permits have also seen an increase, with 1,038,100 applications filed. Sadly, only 58% are being processed on schedule. That's a lot of people waiting for work permits, study permits, and visitor visas.

So, what does this mean for you? The IRCC aims to process most applications within certain timeframes, but with the backlog steadily increasing, it's a good idea to consult with an experienced immigration representative if you haven’t done so already. They can help you navigate this complex process.
