Why Canada's Electric Vehicle Mandate Faces Growing Opposition

Explore why Canadians are pushing back against the EV mandate and what it means for the future.
Canada policy Electric Vehicles Trudeau EV Mandate

The Canadian government has introduced a mandate to require that 20% of new cars sold be zero-emission vehicles (EVs) by next year, escalating to 100% by 2035. Sounds great, right? Not quite! There is growing concern about this unrealistic push and how it's affecting everyday Canadians.

Just last year, Alberta saw over 223,000 new vehicles purchased, yet fewer than 25,000 of those were EVs produced in Canada. In other words, there simply aren't enough EVs available to meet this ambitious goal!

Moreover, the current 100% tariff on EVs produced in China, which makes up 70% of the global EV market, is putting further strain on hard-working Albertan farmers and businesses. It feels like a misuse of power that's only hurting those who want to contribute positively to the economy.

Major auto manufacturers like Ford, GM, and Toyota are raising alarms that this mandate could lead to job losses, and the mayors of 48 cities in Ontario echo these concerns, urging the government to reconsider. Even a recent poll showed that 71% of Canadians are against this mandate due to cost issues and concerns over its feasibility.

It's high time for the federal government to listen to the voices of Canadians and rethink this EV mandate. How can they truly support their citizens if they push forward with unrealistic policies? Let's hope for a practical approach that benefits everyone!
