Alberta’s Teacher Strike: What You Need to Know
Hey parents and families! Big news coming out of Alberta: teachers have rejected a four-year deal, which puts us at the brink of a teacher strike by October 6th. This means there could be disruptions to school as we know it, but the good news is that the Alberta government has a plan to support you during this uncertainty!
If a strike happens, Alberta’s government will be rolling out a payment program to help families. If you have kids aged 12 and under attending a public, separate, or francophone school, you could receive $30 per day, or $150 per week, per child. This is designed to help cover extra costs like childcare while schools are closed.
But that’s not all! There’s also a free online learning toolkit available for parents. It has resources that follow the K-12 curriculum so your kids can keep learning even at home. This toolkit covers essential subjects like language arts, math, and sciences. It’s available in English and French, and is being updated weekly.
The government understands that having kids out of school can be quite stressful for families. They are committed to supporting you, especially as many new students have joined the education system recently. In fact, they've invested a whopping $8.6 billion to build and renovate over 130 schools to meet these needs.
So while the situation is evolving, know that support is on the way! Stay tuned for more information on how to apply for the payment program and access the learning resources. Let’s keep our kids engaged and learning during this time!
