The ongoing teachers’ strike in Alberta has many families juggling work and childcare while navigating learning from home. Fortunately, the Alberta government is stepping in with new financial supports to help ease the burden.

For families with children who have complex care needs, the new measures provide additional assistance if you have an active Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) agreement. These families will receive:

• $30 per child (12 and under) per instructional day
• $60 per child (13 and older) per instructional day

But wait, there’s more! If your child is under 12 years old with an FSCD agreement, you now can receive an extra $30 per instructional day. This means families can collect up to $300 each week during the strike, which can significantly help with unexpected costs.

To apply, just head to the online parent portal starting October 14. You’ll need your child’s FSCD File ID, but there's no separate application process required. Don’t forget, if your child was 12 on October 6, they will still be eligible even if they turn 13 before the strike ends.

Additionally, for those families needing childcare during this time, expect some temporary increases in funding to support full-time out-of-school care through October.

Alberta's educators want our children’s learning to continue, and to support that, students in grades 10 to 12 can also enroll in distance education or switch to home education during the strike.

Lastly, local heritage sites and museums are offering free admission for kids during this time, ensuring everyone has access to engaging learning opportunities while schools are disrupted.
