Big Changes for Alberta's Plant Lovers

Say goodbye to unnecessary paperwork for watering plants in Alberta!
Alberta Community environment plant restoration watership

Great news for all the plant enthusiasts in Alberta! The province is rolling out a new change that removes the need for a temporary diversion licence to water plants as part of riparian restoration projects. This means less red tape and more green production!

In the past, those wanting to water newly planted trees, shrubs, and grasses near rivers and lakes faced delays and challenges due to bureaucratic requirements. Some plants even risked dying from lack of water while waiting for permits, especially during droughts or water shortages.

The new rule empowers communities and restoration groups to focus on what truly matters: nurturing Alberta’s waterways. We can now ensure that our plants get the hydration they need without the bureaucratic hassle!

By allowing a small quantity of water usage without a licence—specifically for small projects using no more than 100 cubic metres a day—we’re paving the way for more successful planting and restoration efforts along our rivers and banks. Strong, healthy vegetation contributes to restoring habitats, preventing erosion, and improving water quality.

This is a huge win for the environment and our communities, allowing better adaptation to changing conditions and ensuring the success of restoration projects. Let’s celebrate cutting the red tape and fostering thriving, healthy ecosystems in Alberta!
