In Alberta, surgical care is getting a boost thanks to the Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) departments! These departments play a vital role in ensuring surgical tools are properly sterilized and ready for use, helping the province achieve an impressive record of 318,920 surgeries last year!

With a generous investment of $243 million over three years in Budget 2025, Alberta is modernizing its MDR departments. This exciting upgrade program aims to reduce surgical delays and waiting times, ensuring that everyone receives prompt care when they need it.

According to the government, “Medical device reprocessing departments keep surgeries safe and on time.” This initiative will not only enhance the preparation of surgical tools but also improve patient care provincewide.

Already, upgrades are in progress at several key hospitals, including:

  • Alberta Children’s Hospital
  • Drumheller Health Centre
  • Grey Nuns Community Hospital
  • Misericordia Community Hospital

Plus, six more hospitals will benefit from these much-needed upgrades, which means many more Albertans will have access to timely surgeries!

This upgrade program is a game-changer for Alberta’s healthcare system, improving surgical efficiency and ensuring safe, timely care for all patients. Stay tuned for more updates on Alberta's growing investment in healthcare!
