Alberta's Commitment to Caribou Recovery: 5 Million Trees by 2030
Great news for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts! Alberta's government has announced a major initiative to plant 5 million trees across northern Alberta by 2030. This investment of $55.8 million is not only aimed at aiding the recovery of our beloved woodland caribou but also at creating hundreds of jobs!
While some caribou populations are showing signs of stability, their long-term survival is still at risk due to extensive legacy seismic lines left barren for decades. These lines can disrupt wildlife habitats, making reforestation crucial. It’s not just about sticking trees in the ground; it requires expert planning, proper soil preparation, and sometimes heavy machinery!
By partnering with Natural Resources Canada, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas will bring together communities to undertake this massive tree-planting effort. The initiative not only supports caribou recovery but also backs rural and Indigenous communities that will benefit from the new jobs created.
And this isn't the first time Alberta's investing in our forests! Over the past years, more than 4,500 km of seismic lines have been treated to enhance caribou habitats. So, let’s applaud these efforts and look forward to seeing a greener, more vibrant Alberta!
