Great news for everyone in Saskatchewan! As of October 1, 2025, the Ministry of Health has teamed up with the Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists to launch an exciting two-year Glaucoma Care Pilot Program. This initiative aims to boost access to glaucoma care by allowing licensed optometrists to provide essential services.

Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr expressed her excitement, saying, 'We're thrilled to introduce this program which makes glaucoma care more efficient and accessible!' This means that patients, especially those in rural and remote areas, can now receive comprehensive glaucoma services closer to home.

With this pilot program, residents of Saskatchewan can expect better access to assessments, monitoring, diagnostic testing, and follow-up care—all delivered by trusted optometrists. This is a huge step forward, especially as it joins other western provinces in ensuring that more people can access the eye care they need.

Dr. Heather Hunter, President of the Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists, voiced her support, highlighting that this expanded funding is a significant win for patient care and accessibility. With over 200 optometrists ready to serve in 42 communities, support will now be closer than ever.
