Safety First: A Look at a Local Company’s Commitment
On August 26, Steele Tech Fabrication Inc. took a big step in the world of workplace safety by pleading guilty to not ensuring the health and safety of a worker. This came after an incident at their steel fabrication shop where a worker suffered serious injuries.
Instead of a traditional fine, Steele Tech agreed to donate $90,000 to Barrhead Composite High School. This money will help purchase new equipment for their shop and welding labs, aimed at enhancing both student and teacher safety. Isn’t it wonderful to see a company turn a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth and learning?
In addition to the donation, Steele Tech will also be under enhanced regulatory supervision for 18 months, ensuring they follow safety guidelines more closely. This creative punishment highlights how the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act can direct resources to improve workplace safety rather than just imposing fines.
So, how does this impact workplaces in Alberta? Well, OHS laws are designed to create safer environments for everyone, protecting workers' rights and setting basic health and safety guidelines for employers. It’s a win-win for both employers and employees when safety takes the front seat!
