Understanding Canada's Immigration Backlog: What You Need to Know

Hello everyone! Have you been waiting on your immigration application? You're not alone. As of June 30th, Canada’s Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) department reported a backlog of 842,800 applications. That's a 5.02% increase from May!

But what does this backlog mean for you? Well, if your application hasn’t been finalized within the standard processing times, it gets tagged as ‘backlog’. The IRCC aims to process 80% of applications on time, but complex cases can take longer. For instance, while Express Entry applications are targeted to be processed in six months, family sponsorship can take up to a year.

As of the same date, there are also 896,100 applications for permanent residency alone! Of those, only 54% were processed on time, leaving a significant number still waiting. If you're applying for a temporary resident visa, work permit, or study permit, note that there were 1,040,700 applications in inventory, with 379,600 pending.
