Alberta Utilities Winter Rules Consumer Advocacy

As winter approaches and temperatures begin to drop, the Alberta government is stepping up to help its residents stay warm and comfortable in their homes.

From October 15 to April 15, special Winter Rules are in place, ensuring that your electricity services can’t be completely disconnected during this chilly season. And starting November 1, similar protections for gas services will kick in as well.

These rules are designed to protect Albetans from having their critical utility services turned off when the weather gets harsh. It’s all about making sure that people can access the energy they need, especially when it matters the most.

No one should have to choose between heating their home or keeping food on the table. During Alberta's tough winters, utilities are not just a convenience; they’re essential for survival. The government is committed to ensuring that everyone has the heat and power they need.

Additionally, if your utilities are disconnected, the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) will reach out to you starting on November 1st to help you get reconnected before winter really sets in. They work with various organizations to provide support and assist you through the process.

If you need assistance with your utility bills or if you have any issues with your provider, don’t hesitate to reach out to the UCA by calling 310-4822, sending an email to UCAhelps.alberta.ca, or by visiting their website.
