Exciting news from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC): rents are dropping in some of Canada’s biggest cities! If you're moving to Canada or looking for a place to rent, this could be a great opportunity for you.
According to the latest report, cities like Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver are seeing declines in asking rents between 2% to 8% compared to last year. That's fantastic news if you're looking to save on your next rental!
But why is this happening? Well, a lot of it has to do with fewer international students and foreign workers coming in, which has eased the intense demand for rentals. This means landlords are becoming more flexible, even offering deals like free rent for a month to attract tenants!
The CMHC also reported that rental housing units are being completed at a high rate, suggesting a strong supply is on the horizon. This adjustment period in the rental market is much needed and is particularly evident in Ontario, where there's a notable decrease in international migration.
Despite the drop in rents, we acknowledge that housing affordability is still a concern, as the cost of rent compared to income remains high. But don’t worry; we’ve got tips for saving money in your new home!
